3 ways the Mic Drop Authority
of Jesus changes EVERYTHING!
A comedian has done it after an excellent joke. It is an indication of complete confidence in their performance, and it showcases as a somewhat arrogant certainty that NO response is worthy except an expensive microphone hitting the floor. I think it was Eddie Murphy or some famous singer or ... Barack Obama? ... who made the mic drop famously memorable. I don't recall, and maybe I'm too lazy to Google it. I have heard rumours of this urban slang being the title of a new television show airing today (okay I just looked that up!).
Anyway, you've seen it. A singer KNOWS their performance was a showstopper, they hit a high note, the song ends, and BOOM, they drop an expensive mic. Yikes. Arrogant? Maybe ... but ...
I would like to consider the moment in history that changed people's perceptions and COULD have closed out with a bold triumphant confidence ... but no mic was dropped and no victory hand was displayed. Total adulation was well-deserved, but the only victory stance the winner made was on a cross.
It was this act that punctuated a life that had modelled forgiveness in a world of stone throwers, had transformed fishermen and tax collectors into world changers (not to mention healing the sick and raising the dead - duh!) ... but yes, He then concluded a human's life with the cross as an exclamation point.
After that, he walked out of the darkness of death and BOOM, Jesus became the boss, and that authority changed everything. He "dropped the mic."
In the following verses, we see the authority of Jesus applied to three specific areas. Let's take a look at Jesus' Mic Drop Authority (I am calling it MDA). The power of Jesus changes how you understand Scripture, influences how you live out your faith in the world, and most importantly, it affects how you say thank you. This biblical example may not be OBVIOUS, but! See if you can find those things here:
While he was teaching in the Temple, Jesus asked, “How is it that the religion scholars say that the Messiah is David’s ‘son,’ when we all know that David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said,
God said to my Master,“Sit here at my right handuntil I put your enemies under your feet.”
“David here designates the Messiah ‘my Master’—so how can the Messiah also be his ‘son’?” The large crowd was delighted with what they heard.
He continued teaching. “Watch out for the religion scholars. They love to walk around in academic gowns, preening in the radiance of public flattery, basking in prominent positions, sitting at the head table at every church function. And all the time they are exploiting the weak and helpless. The longer their prayers, the worse they get. But they’ll pay for it in the end.”
Sitting across from the offering box, he was observing how the crowd tossed money in for the collection. Many of the rich were making large contributions. One poor widow came up and put in two small coins—a measly two cents. Jesus called his disciples over and said, “The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together. All the others gave what they’ll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford—she gave her all.”
Mark 12:35-44, The Message
Cool, huh? Did you find the three areas of Jesus’ authority? Now, let's once again break down that MDA (Mic Drop Authority). It influences ...
1. HOW YOU UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE.With the resurrection of Jesus, well, the aggregate of the Scriptures takes on an entirely new chroma. What was earlier written to describe EARTHLY matters was now shown to have a HOLY dimension as well.
Humans may have written the scripture, but God had both dimensions in mind all along. Consider the Bible as such, and your mind becomes full of so many AHA!-moments you want to show ...
2. HOW YOU TRANSLATE THAT UNDERSTANDING TO YOUR LIFEOne of my favourite Christian faith writers, John Ortberg, said something of Jesus' leadership in juxtaposition to every last political race ever. Really. Each has been hailed as the one that will change everything. However, Ortberg reminds us that it was "the unpredictable influence of an unelected carpenter that continues to endure and spread across the world."
Yup. This Jesus spent His life as a foot-washing servant. The human race aren't a generally humble bunch my birth, right? I mean, a long time ago, it was knowledge and courage that were honoured as virtues. But ... humility? Not until Jesus. How about compassion and forgiveness? Jesus, man. Jesus. He was the first to change that perception of a fulfilling life.
And last, but definitely not least ...
3. HOW YOU RETURN GRATITUDE TO YOUR MAKERYou recall how many healed lepers returned to thank Jesus for making their gross lesions evaporate? Right. ONE. Remembering this true story inspired one of my high school girlfriends to repeat "thankyouJesus" about a hundred times while driving herself to school.
Another one of my Catholic friends reminds me that Mary gave but one command in scripture: "Do whatever He tells you!" and since these many things (probably over 50!) were about how to get along with people my friend, well, HE GETS ALONG WITH PEOPLE.
SO! How do you work out your gratitude? Pretty simple, eh? THANK HIM AND GET ALONG WITH PEOPLE. In some situations, the latter WOULD be a mic drop, right? No, sorry. They ALL would. Jesus was the ultimate mic drop which gave Him that MDA (Mic Drop Authority) because ... His inspiring life, then horrible death and punctuated resurrection, well, it
It was a performance that drew attention to Himself for all the right reasons. Jesus Himself was the ultimate mic drop.
Do you have Mic Drop Authority? No, sorry. You really don't. But ... are you a Christian? Jesus gives YOU every right to make HIS impression obvious and facilitate His MDA. I love this quote from the God character in Bruce Almighty: "People want me to do everything for them. But what they don't realize is they have the power. You want to see a miracle, son? Be the miracle."
You know, the humble widow dropping "her two cents" screeched like a mic drop. It really did. Now, go think of ways that YOU can be a miracle so that when you do something amazing, even it seems as minor as the widow’s mite, it is simply an echo of Him ... and the ringing of that mic drop which any witnesses will hear ... is Jesus.
